Van Insulation with Havelock Wool | Van Build Series

Van insulation was one of the most confusing decisions we have had to make so far for our van build. There are so many options when it comes to insulation and so many factors to consider, such as toxicity, moisture management, r-value, sound proofing, etc. After researching all of our options, we ended up choosing Havelock Wool for our van build for a few key reasons:

1. It’s non toxic. Since we will be living and working in the van, we wanted something that was safe to breathe 24/7.
2. It’s warm. It has an r-value of 7 for the 2” batts which may not be the highest of all time, but the other benefits outweigh having the absolute highest r-value. We also will be installing a heater for any brutally cold nights.
3. It’s great at moisture management. According to their website, “it will take moisture in when the ambient air exceeds 65% rh. When those levels drop below the threshold, moisture is dissolved adding to temperature control and indoor air quality.” One thing we know we will get questions on is why we don’t have a vapor barrier. According to Havelock “condensation is inevitable and entirely unavoidable. Plan for escape routes, not a feeble, misguided attempt at barriers.”
4. It’s easy to install. It’s not rigid and can easily be cut or ripped apart to fit the spaces in the van. You also don’t need any protective gear to install it.
5. It’s good at sound deadening. As you may notice in our vlog, we did not install rattle trap. We aren’t 100% sure if we will regret this or not, but Havelock wool has a 90 and 95 noise reduction coefficient for batts and loose fill, respectively, so we feel like it will do a pretty dang good job at noise reduction.

This is most likely the first time this fan has ran in roughly five years. You can’t see it in the video, but it spewed dust everywhere.

When I recorded this video, this fan was in the location in which it was in “ABANDONED HOUSE – Ceiling Fans Inside” ( The basement had been gutted, but the fan remained installed for a week or so. Shortly after this video was recorded, the fan became mine.

Air purifiers are designed to filter the air by cleaning out harmful particles and air pollutants like mold, allergy particles, pet dander, dust and pollution. Air purifiers come in a variety of different sizes and types, the most common being HEPA air purifiers. Most people buy air purifiers to improve the quality of the air in their homes and reduce allergens, harmful particles or different smells. Air purifiers are especially helpful to people who suffer from asthma, allergies, or other sensitivities to air pollutants. Selecting the best air purifier can be hard, but, by understanding key differences, people can make educated decisions based on their unique needs. ir Purifiers America provides reviews and performance tests. The HEPA air purifiers we offer remove the large particles such as dust and pollen as well as smaller particles such as mold, animal dander, and house dust mites. A HEPA air filter is essential in trapping these types of particles and removing them from your environment. Regular replacement of the HEPA air filter ensures optimal performance of your air purifier as well as extends the life of your air purifier. Some air purifiers feature a UV light to eliminate airborne bacteria and viruses reducing the spread of influenza, tuberculosis and measles.
