14 Dangerous Products You Need To Throw Away Right Now

Views:437|Rating:5.00|View Time:10:4Minutes|Likes:11|Dislikes:0
Here are the 14 objects you need to throw away right now for your safety.

#Safety #LifeHacks #Tips

Music:

Summary:
1. Pancake Mix. Wait one minute before grabbing those cleaning supplies because it’s time to hit the pantry. First, get rid of that old pancake mix. Snopes.com says that pancake mix can produce mold. Mold can produce not only gross pancakes but can be life-threatening as well.

2. Off-brand phone chargers. Now, you’re probably saying, I don’t want to pay $30 for an iPhone charger. While it may be tempting to buy off brand phone chargers from the dollar store, they actually do more harm than good! Off brand chargers sometimes can do some awful damage to your expensive smartphone.

3. Some expired medications. While not all medications become toxic, the experts at healthyway.com agree that psychiatric drugs should definitely not be kept past their expiration date, as well as eye drops, as both can become toxic. Certain medications may experience changes in chemical properties as they get older. They also become weaker and potentially unsafe.

4. Expired skin products and makeup. Get rid of all your expired skin products and makeup! Especially sunscreen. Research from healthyway.com has shown that after a while, sunscreen can lose its potency, which would be a major bummer after a long day at the beach. Especially if you have pale skin and tend to burn easily!

5. Old toothbrushes. You know that sticky old brush you put in your mouth (hopefully) twice a day? Turns out you need to change that every 3 to 4 months, according to the American Dental Association. They can harbor microorganisms that: “could cause oral and/or systemic infection”.

6. The kitchen sponge. Scientists have found that old kitchen sponges can host a bunch of bacteria, and when it’s left at room temperature, that bacteria multiply. Time to ditch that dirty old sponge! Although most of the bacteria that is found in kitchen sponges aren’t harmful, there are certain pathogens that could cause infections.

7. Plastic cutting boards. Plastic cutting boards can harbor some pretty gross bacteria. According to an article by NC State University, bacteria forms in those creases you’re making while cutting kale or some other fashionable diet. Ditch the plastic, and buy some wood!

8. Plastic containers. BPA is the reason you should be ditching those plastic containers of yours, or at least the ones that have either a “7” or a “pc” on them. What’s BPA you ask? Health.com states that BPA is a harmful synthetic compound that can leak into your food. BPA stands for bisphenol A, and is a type of industrial chemical which is used to make certain plastics. BPA is usually found in plastic food containers and water bottles.

9. Diet Soda. According to health.com, diet soda contains the sweeteners saccharin and sucralose, which can affect your body negatively and give you intolerances. Because diet soda has fake sugar in it, it tricks your body into thinking it is drinking real sugar. This makes your body confused on how it should respond. Physiologically speaking, this means that when you drink diet soda, your body is not releasing the hormone that is responsible for regulating blood sugar as well as blood pressure.

10. Dirty or old air filters. Yes, some companies have promised to phase out the harmful phthalates, but some still contain them. Phthalates are harmful to the development of the reproductive system. Dirty or old air filters are home to all sorts of allergens, mold, and dust. This can reduce the airflow in a home, which is why you should always throw out old or dirty air filters.

11. Unclean contact lens case. Optometrists at health.com say that you should buy a new contact lens case every three months, as the dirty ones can cause damage to your eyes.

12. Old clothing. Psychiatrists and mental health professionals agree this is more of a mental thing than a life-threatening one, but ditch those old clothes! They’re cluttering your closet and making you feel trapped in your own home! Consider giving them away to charity.

13. Air fresheners. According to the experts at health.com, air fresheners feature 2, 5-dichlorophenol (2, 5-DCP), a metabolite of 1,4-dichlorobenzene, which is linked to many health-related issues, including cancer.

14. Non-stick cookware. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that nonstick cookware likely contains a carcinogen. Switch to glass or ceramic, or use some PAM instead!.

The BlueGreen Alliance Foundation has a tool to help everyone from building professionals to consumers find energy efficient housing products that are healthy and made locally. Building Clean—found atwww.BuildingClean.org—offers an easy-to-use interface to access its one-of-a-kind database to help you identify products that meet customer demands and certification requirements for healthy, American-made, energy and water efficient products. The database includes more than 3,500 U.S. facilities manufacturing building products, which are searchable by categories such as product sector, state, material, CSI code, zip code radius, and others. The website can also be used to search for products with third-party health certifications and services that promote transparency about the chemicals contained in the products. Products and manufacturers of products available on the database include appliances, heating and air conditioning equipment, insulation, lighting, plumbing, roofing, sealants, windows and doors, and water filtration. Additional health and certification information is included for flooring, paint and wallcoverings.

Build Equinox, CERV – Smart Home Ventilation with add-on heat pump heating & cooling

Instructor: Lauren Asplen & Dana Parker

Lauren Asplen, Director of Healthy Sustainability Programs, manages the Building Clean project, which encourages the purchase of local and healthier energy efficient building products. With two decades’ experience in manufacturing, she is well versed in many product sectors the program aims to grow. In 2012, she spearheaded a program that gained White House recognition as a “Champion of Change” for engaging front-line workers in identifying industrial energy efficiency opportunities. Lauren started at the BlueGreen Alliance in 2013. She attended the first Harvard University/USGBC executive certificate program on Building for Health in 2016. At BGA, her work focuses on hazardous chemicals in building products.

Dana Parker is the National Program Manager for the BlueGreen Alliance Foundation. Dana brings 18 years in non-profit coalition building and issue advocacy experience to BGAF and has worked in a variety of capacities in the environmental, labor and manufacturing communities. Dana currently works as a part of BGAF’s Building Clean project team where she advocates for the use of healthy, U.S. made energy efficient building products among housing stakeholders including contractors, architects, non-profit/government housing organizations, and manufacturers of energy efficient building products.

Prior to her current role, Dana was the Program Manager for BGAF’s Clean Economy Manufacturing Center (CEMC) where she worked with wind, solar, advanced transportation and other clean economy manufacturers to help build CEMC’s educational workshop and webinar content, which focused on educating potential suppliers about clean economy markets and supply chains. Dana helped deliver this content to a national audience made up of manufacturers, economic development professionals, elected leaders and others interested in learning more about the growing clean economy and the economic opportunities it can provide.

Dana also spent three years working for the BlueGreen Alliance and Apollo Alliance in Michigan before the two organizations merged in 2011. During that time, she worked with the manufacturing community to support policies that could help grow Michigan’s overall clean energy economy and help make it easier for domestic suppliers to enter clean energy supply chains.
